Somatic Experiencing

SE also referred on this site as Somatic therapy, is a body-focused approach to healing trauma and chronic stress. Instead of focusing only on thoughts or memories, it helps you tune into physical sensations in your body—like tension, breathing, or subtle feelings—to gently process and release stored stress.

How It Works

 When we experience something overwhelming, our body’s natural stress response can get “stuck.” Even after the event is over, the body may continue to hold onto that tension.

Somatic Experiencing works by:

  • Helping you notice and understand physical sensations in a safe, guided way
  • Gently releasing built-up stress and survival energy
  • Supporting your nervous system in returning to a calm, balanced state

This process happens gradually, at your pace, without needing to relive painful experiences.

Session Insights

Sessions are typically calm and conversational, but may also include:

  • Awareness of body sensations (such as tightness, warmth, or movement)
  • Guided exercises to build a sense of safety and stability
  • Small, manageable steps to process stress or trauma
  • Pauses to ensure you stay comfortable and grounded

You remain in control the entire time, and nothing is forced.

What It Supports

 Somatic Experiencing may support people dealing with:

  • Trauma or PTSD
  • Anxiety and chronic stress
  • Depression
  • Chronic pain or tension
  • Feeling “stuck,” numb, or overwhelmed
